In the Carnarvon Gorge section of Carnarvon National Park, towering white sandstone cliffs form a spectacular steep-sided gorge with narrow, vibrantly coloured and lush side gorges.
Boulder-strewn Carnarvon Creek winds through the gorge. Remnant rainforest flourishes in the sheltered side gorges while endemic Livistona nitida cabbage tree palms, ancient cycads, ferns, flowering shrubs and gum trees line the meandering main gorge. Grassy open forest grows on the cliff-tops.
The Battleship Spur track is the most popular remote walk off the Carnarvon Gorge main track. The Spur sits about 650 metres in elevation above the Carnarvon Gorge Visitor Area, commanding magnificent views over the gorge and the Great Dividing Range.
The shortest route to Battleship Spur is via a gully in Boowinda Gorge onto a long, steep ridge then up the side of the spur to the top and out to the lookout. An overnight camp at the Big Bend camping area is the best way to tackle this walk, leaving for the spur early the following morning. Average walking time from Big Bend camping area to Battleship Spur lookout is between two to three hours one-way.

This 14 kilometre one-way walk is strictly for physically fit bushwalkers. It involves some steep climbs so good walking gear is essential. The entire walk from the visitor area to Battleship Spur can be done in a very long day. However, most people camp at Big Bend overnight (bookings are essential), and then do the climb in the cool of the morning. Water is not available once you leave Carnarvon Creek so take plenty with you for the climb. The walk should not be attempted in overcast or rainy weather. In these conditions, views of the gorge are obscured and dangerous walking and navigational conditions are created. |
| Best Time To Go: | The cooler months of the year from April to October are the best times to visit. In summer, daytime temperatures can exceed 40 degrees. Winter daytime temperatures average around 20 degrees but can drop to a frosty zero degrees overnight. |

Carnarvon Gorge is between Roma and Emerald. From Roma, drive north 90 kilometres to Injune then a further 160 kilometres along the Carnarvon Highway. From Emerald, drive south 65 kilometres to Springsure then east 70 kilometres to Rolleston, and a further 61 kilometres to the Carnarvon turnoff.
