Mackay's hinterland offers mountainous terrain, tropical rainforest and exotic flora and fauna, as well as a taste of life in the country.
The highlands, incorporating Eungella National Park are a rare example of where tropical and sub-tropical rainforest meets and whether hiking for a few hours or a few days, the towering trees and dramatic views over the valley below leaves a lasting impression. While exploring, you could spot birdlife in this incredible forest sanctuary or a platypus breaking the surface of a river.
Further inland a different experience awaits with towns like Nebo and Clermont offering an insight into local country life. Explore the rich mining and farming history, which continue to a big part of the region to this day.
