Description

The Burrum Coast Discovery Trail is a great days outing or a few days stay in some of the most peaceful and picturesque seaside villages the Fraser Coast has to offer. Just a short drive from Hervey Bay, the journey takes you to the fishing hamlets of Toogoom and Burrum Heads where you will find kilometres of unspoilt beaches, calm waters, walking tracks, picnic spots, boat ramps, cafes, wildlife and wildflowers in season.

... more

Stroll along soft, sandy beaches, collect fascinating shells, get out a fishing rod or two and try your hand to catch mackerel or one of the many other species which abound along this coastline. The rivers and creeks are magic to explore by boat or canoe. The extensive sand flats, channels and mangrove lined banks are teeming with fish and crabbing is another popular pastime.

If you want a more relaxed visit, just sit back and watch the pelicans or some of the other 90 species of bird life that inhabit the area, or watch as the fishermen clean their catch of the day as the pelicans watch on. This is a great family holiday area with plenty of natural things for the children to do like explore the beaches, swim in the safe areas, fly a kite, learn to fish, and to share quality family time.

While you are out and about you can journey a short distance inland and visit the historic townships of Howard and Torbanlea. Howard is a small town, 284 kilometres north of Brisbane and 37 kilometres west of Hervey Bay and was the home of Andrew Fisher, the first Federal Member for Wide Bay and first Labour Prime Minister of Australia. There are excellent playgrounds, skate park, post office drapery and remnants of an historic past. Torbanlea is a rural village near the Bruce Highway, 25 kilometres north west of Maryborough and has a history of more than 100 years of coal mining. On the way to visiting these places you will find surprising spots to visit such as an adventure park and historic homes
