Natural Encounters

The traditional owners of Fraser Island, the Butchulla people, believe that the towering coloured sand cliffs of Fraser Island were permanently stained when passing gods brushed against them. Today, when you stand before these multi-coloured cliffs and peer up, it’s easy to see why this story was told.

The coloured sands are just one of many fascinating natural encounters to be enjoyed on World Heritage listed Fraser Island. The island is home to 80,000 year old rainforest that defies the laws of nature by thriving in sand. On the Fraser Island Great Walk you’ll get to experience these rainforests first hand and you might even spy a Fraser Island dingo, the purest breed of dingo in Australia.

Climb to the top on rocky Indian Head for a breath-taking view of the island and ocean brimming with manta rays, turtles, dolphins, dugongs and colourful fish. From various points on the island you can also see the whales migrating during the winter months. The whales like to linger in the sheltered waters of the Great Sandy Strait, making the Fraser Coast the home of Australia’s best whale-watching experience.
