Whales on the Fraser Coast, Hervey Bay, Gold Coast, Brisbane

Whale Watching

Between late July and early November, pods of humpback whales take a break from their migration to frolic in the calm, temperate waters along Queensland's coast.

From the calm blue sea, the massive shape of a humpback whale — one of the world's largest creatures — rises up majestically. In an awesome display of size and strength it lifts its body from the water, crashing back into the sea with a spectacular splash. Their playful behaviour make for precious moments for the visitors on the cruises — the humpbacks are born entertainers.

A diverse range of whale watching tours leave from Hervey Bay, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and various locations up the coast along the Great Barrier Reef, ensuring there's a tour to suit all visitors. The area is so popular with migrating whales that tour operators can generally guarantee sightings. Only in Queensland can you come face-to-face with one of the world’s largest creatures in such an intimate way.
