The Tropic of Capricorn is the extreme southern position of the sun in apparent annual journey, (it's northern most position is the Tropic of Cancer). As the earth tilts on its axis, the sun appears to move in an orbit inclined 23 and a half degrees to the plane of the Earth's Equator. It reaches its southern position, the Summer Solstice on about 21 December each year and its opposite, the Winter Solstice on about 21 June each year. These two dates begin the official periods of Summer in the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
