Natural Encounters

The islands located off the Central Queensland coast are important nesting sites for loggerhead and green sea turtles as well as many rare bird varieties. The coral cays and crystal clear waters that surround these islands are abundant in tropical fish painted a riot of bright, vibrant colours. Eager visitors come from around the world to dive or snorkel in the blue azure waters and mingle with the colourful characters of the deep.

One of the most impressive areas of Central Queensland is lush Carnarvon Gorge, an island of lively green in dry landscape. Dissected by soaring white sandstone cliffs and dotted with rock pools and spectacular waterfalls it offers many rewarding bushland walks. At one site, over 2000 ancient Aboriginal engravings, ochre stencils and freehand paintings adorn a sandstone wall. This stunning gallery contains one of the best examples of stencil art in Australia and is well worth the visit.

There are many other national parks in Central Queensland, preserved for their pristine wilderness and rare natural beauty. In the crisp forest air, the musical chimes of freshwater creeks blend with the melodies of birds in song.
