Gemfest - 'Festival of Gems' is the annual festival that celebrates and showcases sapphires and where they come from, the Gemfields. Just 40 minutes drive from Emerald and at one time the largest sapphire fields in the world, the Gemfields comprises the towns of Anakie, Sapphire, Rubyvale and the Willows.
In what began as a small festival with just a few traders in 1988 with the celebration of the Australian Bicentenary, the festival today has over 150 traders, miners and merchants and is visited by over 4,000 people. Visitors come from as far away as Perth just to visit and share the excitement and marvel at the gems on display. 2009 marks Gemfest's 22nd Anniversary and promises to be bigger than ever featuring an amazing combination of activities, exhibitions, entertainment, prizes and demonstrations to keep you busy.
