West of Rockhampton is the Central Highlands, offering a real contrast to Capricorn's coastal ecology and culture. The Highlands are home to vast and diverse agricultural and mining operations as well as some of Queensland’s most dramatic natural landscapes.
A visit to the National Parks in the area promises views of towering escarpments and gorges, ancient rainforest and crystal clear waterfalls. The famous Carnarvon Gorge in Carnarvon National Park offers great geological appeal, rare and ancient indigenous rock art and delightful walking tracks. Just half an hour drive off the Capricorn Highway is Blackdown Tableland National Park, boasting immense sandstone gorges and sweeping views of the endless plains around the park.
The Central Highlands also offer some of the best freshwater fishing in the region. The immense lakes and dams such as Lake Maraboon are home to great Australian catches like Murray Cod, Yellowbelly and Barramundi.
