Safehouse Exhibition will be held at the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery from September to November and looks at American slaves and their escape to freedom. By examining the square quilts hung on the clotheslines of freedom houses, these quilts would signify a safe haven for escaping slaves where they would be hidden under floorboards to avoid detection.... more
Still hanging in the churches of Georgia today these quilts signify a challenging period of time in American culture. At the safehouses, the weary slaves were given food, rest, and a change of clothing. Instances often occurred in which common citizens did not have direct contact with the fugitive slaves, but were nonetheless equally vital in attaining their eventual freedom.... less
