Natural Encounters

Witnessing the hatching of a rare animal that may live for 200 years is a privilege you won’t soon forget. That’s the experience you’ll have on a Bundaberg beach after sunset, during the sea turtle nesting and hatching season. You can also catch this spell-binding event on the islands strung along the Bundaberg coast.

Turtle Nesting and Hatching

Many varieties of turtles such as the loggerhead, green, leatherback and flatback nest from November to March each year along the Queensland coast from Bundaberg in the south to the Cape in the tropical north as well on the islands of the Southern Great Barrier Reef (Heron, Wilson, Lady Elliot, Lady Musgrave).

The Turtle Nesting and Hatching season is an amazing experience and visitors to Queensland will find opportunities to witness these nocturnal events in a controlled environment at a number of island and mainland locations. Near Bundaberg, Mon Repos supports the largest concentration of nesting sea turtles on the east Australian mainland.

Along with the nesting turtles of this region, islands such as Lady Elliot and Lady Musgrave offer some of the best conditions for reef snorkelling and diving in the country. The amazing variety of tropical fish, dolphins and manta rays, and the spectacular colourful coral, will take your breath away.

To the west of Bundaberg you’ll be confronted by soaring sandstone cliffs and monoliths that punctuate the rich eucalypt woodland around Cania Gorge. And if you’re very quiet you might just spy the bashful platypus.
