Description
Lamington National Park boasts extensive walking tracks along the McPherson Range, which allow visitors to explore the area's forests, creeks and waterfalls. Dramatic lookouts afford views over the Gold Coast, south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales.
Lamington is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, which includes the most extensive areas of subtropical rainforest in the world. As the Border Track to Mount Bithongabel climbs 240 metres, observe the change from subtropical to temperate forest. Good examples of Antarctic Beech, a cool temperate species, are growing in the area around Mount Bithongabel.
... moreThe view from Bithongabel Lookout allows one to trace Bernard O'Reilly's journey when searching for the lost Stinson in 1937, along the McPherson Range to the West as far as Mount Throakban. Continue past some large tree ferns on the left to Toolona Lookout where a view can be obtained of Mount Warning and Murwillumbah.

The altitude of Lamington National Park provides a great escape from the Summer heat, although winter walkers are rewarded with clear views and a lesened chance of rain and leeches.

General Comments
The Mount Bithongabel track features: Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, Antarctic Beech and stunning trees. Take the Border Track to Mount Bithongabel. Many large clumps of Antarctic beech trees are found in this area. On a clear day, lookouts provide spectacular views of the Limpinwood Valley, Mount Warning and the Tweed Range. During winter months, walkers are likely to hear the loud ringing call of the Albert's lyrebird.
The trail is approximately 12.6 kilometres with an easy to moderate difficulty rating which should take about five hours to complete. Mount Bithongabel is the most accessible of the border lookouts in Lamington.
How To Get There
From Broadbeach, drive 40 kilometres to Canungra via Nerang and follow the signs to Green Mountains and O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat. From the north, take Pacific Motorway exit 34 to Beenleigh, route 92 to Tamborine, and route 90 to Canungra and follow the signs. The 36 kilometres winding and often narrow bitumen road from Canungra requires care and takes at least 50 minutes. This road is unsuitable for caravans.
