Brisbane - Experience Brisbane - Picasso & his collection

Picasso & his collection

Hot on the heels of the highly successful 'Andy Warhol' retrospective, Brisbane will again exclusively play host to another block buster exhibition - 'Picasso & his collection'. Featuring Pablo Picasso's personal art collection, it will be the first time this body of work has appeared outside Europe when it opens at Brisbane's Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) 9 June, with the season running to 14 September.

'Picasso & his collection' will present around 120 works from Picasso's extraordinary collection plus around 80 important works by the artist himself. The exhibition includes paintings, drawings and prints by artists such as Matisse, Renoir, Cézanne, Rousseau, Modigliani and Braque, as well as a selection of Oceanic and African works. A special highlight of the show will be a nineteenth century Torres Strait Island mask, loaned to Queensland especially for the exhibition by Picasso's family.

Queensland Art Gallery Director Tony Ellwood said 'Picasso & his collection' exhibition will be curated by the Director of the Musée Picasso, Paris, Anne Baldassari in conjunction with the Gallery.

"Master works by Picasso have been selected to hang alongside works from his collection by friends and contemporaries to highlight their inspiration and direct relationships" Mr Ellwood said.

'Picasso & his collection' will give unique insights into the thinking and visual language of an artist who played the most vital role in the creation of modern art.

Picasso amassed a range of works and objects over his lifetime which reflect a very personal, idiosyncratic collection and paints in its own way an intimate portrait of Picasso the artist,' he said.

Picasso's interest in African and Oceanic sculpture has been widely discussed, but far less is generally known about his collection of work by his contemporaries.

Picasso's collection was donated by his family to the French State after his death in 1973, and is now held by the Musée Picasso in Paris and previous exhibitions of Picasso's collection have only ever been mounted in Paris, Munich and Barcelona.

For the duration of the 'Picasso & his collection' the Gallery's Australian Cinémathèque will present an extensive curated program of films about Picasso, as well as additional programs about the artists whose work was collected by Picasso.

Highlights of the film program include The Mystery of Picasso (1955) by Henri-Georges Clouzot.

Additional to standard opening hours, audiences can visit the exhibition on Friday nights and experience 'Picasso Up Late', a program of live entertainment, talks and films from 5.30pm until 9.15pm (the Gallery will close at 9.30pm). Tickets include exhibition entry and bookings are required.

'Picasso and his collection' has been organised by the Musée Picasso, Paris in association with the Queensland Art Gallery and Art Exhibitions Australia.
